How do i dispose of my old computer?

We get this question a lot.  Generally there are two options, give it away or throw it out.

Both actions have the same consequences except for one difference.  One should not throw out a computer in the general trash because there are toxic substances in the machine especially in the batteries.  You should contact your local municipality and ask them how you can dispose of your old computer.

That being said, here are the other concerns you should have when disposing of an old computer.  Most old machines may not be worth much to you, but there are companies that will pay to “throw out” your computer.  There are precisious metals on electronic parts that are worth money to some companies.  Also these companies will salvage working computer components to sell as used parts.

The biggest concern one should have when disposing of one’s computer is personal data.  Many people will format a hard drive or reinstall an operating system and notice their data is not viewable.  Now they think their data is erased and safe.  This is not the case.  Doing those two procedures are fine if you are giving your computer away to someone you trust, but not when you are throwing it out or giving it away.  People can run software and rebuild your data.  There are criminals that buy used computers so they can try to recover deleted information.  The used computer may be worth $50 but what is your personal information worth?  We recommend a low level or destructive format to erase the data so it cannot be recovered, or remove your hard drive and store it in a safe place.

It is very important to protect your data and protect yourself.  Feel free to comment about this article or ask any questions.
